19 YEARS OF BHAGYAM ! BY THIRUVENKADU JEYARAMAN .

The late Madurai Mani Iyer was a chapter in the Indian Carnatic music field . He was a great Kohinoor diamond { just came & gone }. We know only his incomparable music & don’t know him as a “ great human “. His soujanyam was as simple as his great music . The combination of both simplicity & beauty , is a very rare one , isn’t it ? Sri Jeayaraman is a lamp in a vessel (Kudam ) in the music world . Of the disciples of Mani Iyer , he was immediate next to Vembu Iyer , who was the right hand of Mani Iyer . He lived with Mani Iyer as his disciple in his home . He is the best Teacher of date . He is sharing hi thoughts with us here . Now , over to him :- 
“ 19 great years ! Yes ! I was blessed to live with that Mahathma – the greatest music exponent admired all over the world ! It was my poorva jenma punya , that in disguise of my Guru , elevated & blessed me . I should also refer another name immediately , after uttering my Guru’s name – he too is my Guru . I am referring Sri Vembu Anna , who came down to my level than that of my Guru Mani Iyer , to teach me music . He was the one who handed me over to Mani Iyer & included me as a member of that family . 

Our family in Thiruvenkadu had no any sort of connection with the music at all & I was the first one of that kind . My father & grand father were both Vedhic exponents . ( Vedha vitthu ) . My father’s elder brother used to paint excellently . So , everybody insisted my grand father to make me too a painter by giving the right training in it . But he refused saying “ How to go for another profession rather than studying vedha , in our Vedhic family ? “ It is only a divine decision that I am blessed to learn music , coming from such a Vedhic family . I would sing back , if somebody sings infront of me . One day , my grand mother was singing a song . I was replaying it just by hearing it . grand dad listened me . He must have thought some thing , I don’t know . He said “ it seems this fellow will learn music “ & arranged our local Agora Nayanakar to teach me music by fixing Rs 2/= pm as salary ! I continued both school studies & music . I had go a long distance to the school & at a stage I had to give it up for the sake of the music . Then , I learned music from our relative Melattoor Swaminatha Dhikshithar at Kumbakonam for 5 years . At this stage our family suddenly suffered & I had to look after that . Then again the thirst of music . I suffered like hell to search for a right Guru . The God used to help me in difficulties & in the same way this problem too was solved . 

On the advise of my grandma , I went Mayavaram to learn music . It was during evacuation . Mani Iyer too was there . I just had little wavering mind on seeing the name board at the entrance of his house . “ Just go & explain my situation . if he okays it , won’t it be my luck ? “ Thinking so , I reached his door step . Vembu Anna was singing inside . He just saw me & enquired about me & took me inside . From that day onwards , he never let me down till the last.  

“ This boy wants to learn music from you . “ As there was a screen in between I couldn’t see the person he was talking to . On the other side , my Gurunatha was sitting . “ tell that boy to sing something ! “ I sat at that place next to the verandah & sang Thyagaraja’s adamodi kalathe Keerthan . I couldn’t find whether he liked or not . “ Where are you residing ? “ “ how will you come from Thiruvenkadu ? It is 8 miles away & you will have to walk ! “ he worried . I was glad thinking inwardly that a I got a prize & said “ No . It is not that much difficult . I will come . “ 
“ In a month I will be only a few days here . After considering all that I will teach . “ Then he consulted the almanac himself to find an auspicious day & said “ We will start on the 9th June . Come on that day . “ My relationship with him began on that 9th June & that bhagyam continued for 19 full years & ended on an 8th June & he was no more on that day . ( Tears roll down on his cheeks uncontrollably) . I walked 8 miles & learned music , whenever my Gurunatha was in town . Then , I got an old cycle . Then , Kuttralam Visvanathaiyar was in Mayavaram . Vembu Anna & myself used to go to his house & playful kaccheries would be going on till late night . Anna would bring me back saying “ come home & have dinner & sleep “ Like this , I casually began to stay there . I never asked for a permission & they too never told me to stay . but treated me casually as if I was one of the family members . Vembu Anna was behind it . 
Later , when Gurunatha returned to Madras he told me “ You too come to Madras with us “ Vembu Anna was behind this too . Whenever Gurunatha was not in town , it was Vembu Anna , who taught me music . He started teaching from playing Thambur . He wished that I should really become great in music . He had very big heart . To put it rightly , my gurunatha was a punyavan . Otherwise , would he have got one like Vembu Anna , to look after him lifelong that much carefully ? He protected him like , protecting the lighted lamp with the palms . Though , he didn’t sing professionally , his was the music so deep . His entire desire in music had been doused after the demise of the Gurunatha ! He separated himself like a Sanyasin . His son Sankaranarayanan is compensating his absence , by singing brilliantly . 

I come back to my life with my Gurunatha . I had gone aalover the country & not only learned the music but the life too . His each & every word action would be so deeply thought over well . They used to comment about the musicians know only the music . He proved it wrong . He had interest in the day to day worldly affairs & would listen to the news of the radio daily . Even when his eye sight bcame too dim , he would tell me to read the Hindu & listen . My poor knowledge in English improved only by him . He would tell me to read the spelling of the difficult words ( to me ) & explain me the meaning . He was an expert in advising minutely to his disciples & friends . He would do it with reasons & facts . He gave me the thambur , in 1957 & said “ Whenever you visit any kaccheri , go along with this ; shouldn’t go without this . Then only others will know who you are & your profession ; Then the news will soread ; It will help & remind them to book you for a concert . Thambur is doing free advertisement to you . Remember this always . So practical . 

He had much interest in the politics . Gandhian . His close friends named a pet name with Gandhi ! This friends’ circle was in Trichy . There was Radhakrishnan building with 15/20 houses . Ghatam vidhvan Alangudi Ramachandran too was there . Gurunatha’s friends : Orient Insurance Srinivasa Iyer , Visvanatha Iyer , Manikkodi writer Citti @ Sundararajan etc would celebrate 2 day Srirama Navami festival . First day Vembu Anna would sing ; Next day Gurunatha would . Thiruvalankadu Sundaresa Iyer , Govindasami Pillai etyc had played the pakka vadhyams . These friends would move with him very closely with a right . Because he always expressed his opinions firmly but softly , theynamed him Handhi . Citti would express his views in a cut & dry manner . So , he was CR ( Rajaji ) ; Insurance Srinivasan looked after the fionancial side & hence he was Deshmukh ( the then Financial minister ) 
It was a pleasant scene to them all discussing the worldly affairs , Even now , It gives pleasure . Golden days is the right expression to describe it . 

Gurunatha used to talk with examples . Some of them would be related with the cooking . He hada friend namely Rajanna Chettiar . Once Guru explained him “ What is a good music ? “ He began “ drop the tamrind in the good lead vessel ( sombu ) of Kumbakonam …..” and till frying in the pure ghee . “ The portion on standing on the upper part , you see , that Is rasam . The portion lying under the vessel ( vandal ) is the reason for the taste of the rasam . In the music too , all the efforts , sincere work , etc ; of the beginning days , all should stay underneath as gnana vandal . Then only the tasty rasam is available . “ He had a good taste in food ; but the quantity he ate was too less; quality conscious ! “ An artist’s duty is only to please the audience . If say that you are singing for yourself , then you should sing in your home only . When you have come to a public dais , then you must respect the desire of the audience who come eagerly to listen your concert & please him . “ He used to say . 

Once his concert in the Kapali temple of Mylapore . I have seen the people sitting on the compound wall to listen him . He would sometimes tell me go & check how the mike works . I went out & listened to the mike . A rickshawala , kept the seat of his rickshaw on the road & rested on it to listen the concert . Somebody called him to hire him . “ my cart won’t come today > “ Are ! Take more money , if you want . get up . “ “ What a big money is yours . I can earn it tomorrow easily . But , if I miss iyer’s music today , then how & when to get it again ? My cart WON”T COME “ This is the magnanimity of my Gurunath’s music . He attracted all from the layman to vidhvans – Gana Kaladhara . Never disappointed his fans .

CRICKET POOCCHI { INSECT } – THANI AVARTTHANAM !  [ SOLO RECITAL ]

Sri Rajagopalan is 72 now ( in 2002 ). He is the Ex : cricket player of the Pudukkottai State , during the British Empire . The sweet sunadham of Palghat Mani Iyer pulled him to the empire of the carnatic music from the cricket ground . He is sharing his golden thoughts , about Mani Iyer & his talent here . Now , he speaks :-

“ In those days , if somebody came to Pudukkottai & enquired about cricket poocchi , nobody would say ‘ I don’t know him ‘ I am that poocchi . I don’t know myself , how I got this nickname . I used to visit Madras often to play in the league matches . The King of Pudukkottai too was much interested in both the cricket & the carnatic music . I too had the same amount of interest in both from my childhood itself . The reason was the father of the Bombay sisters mr. Ramaswamy Iyer . He was running a Sangeetha Samajam there & on every New Moon day , the music kaccheries used to take place . All big partyies like Ariyakkudi , Chembai , GNB , Chowdaiyya , Rajamanickam Pillai , Palghat Mani , Pazhani Subbaiya pillai etc ;. All the Vidhvans used to stay in Ramaswamy Iyer’s home only . Our was the adjacent one . My ears listened Mani’s music. Today , I am 72. From that day onwards , I had attended numerous Kaccheries , only to enjoy his mrithangam . The Kaccheries used to be conducted in the Town Hall of Pudukkottai . 500/600 people can be accommodated . No mike fecilities in those days . Moreover , the people had good music sense & were good rasikas . so , automatically , the kaccheries would all be a grand ones . It was the native of the Laya Maha vidhvan Sri Dhakshinamurthy Pillai . So , Palghat Mani would be excited , for , he had high regards for Pillai . Then itself , Pillai praised Mani’s talent & said that one day he would become famous . In Chettinad , there was a vidhvan namely Vinai Theertthan Chettiyar , who used to sing wonderfully . In his kaccheri at Pudukkottai , Rajamanickam Pillai – violin ; Palghat – Mrudthangam . It was one of the early days kaccheries of Mani , I attended in my youth . 

A Particular Kaccheri is unforgettable one . GNB – Vocal ; Pillai – violin ; Mani – Mruthangam ; Pazhani Subramanya Pillai – Kanjira ! Famous vidhvans like Karaikkudi Sambasiva Iyer , Karaikkudi Muttyvaiyer were present there in the Hall . Mani’s Mruthangam spoke excellently that day . Pazani just mingled with that talent . when his turn came , he simply kept down his instrument & said What is there left for me to do with my Kanjira , after Mani has plasyed like this ? “ GNB said immediately “ All the rasikas listened Mani now & awaiting eagerly to yours . Should they be disappointed ? “ Pillai too accepted this & then began with his Kanjira…. You
know ! Ohoho ! Such an excellent one it was . Vidhvans used to respect too much , like this each other ! 

Mani too had the same amount of respect/regard for Pillai & I had a chance to see it at Calcutta . Then , I was working in Calcutta . There was a Rasika Ranjani Sangeetha Sabha . famous vidhvans like Mani , Pazhani Subbudu had attended the Sri Thyagaraja Aradhana festival . All of them were singing the Pancharathnak Keertthana . Pazhani didn’t bring his instrument . Mani noted it . suddenly he handed over his instrument to him – which was readily adjusted with Sruthi & told him play with it . A small boy was there with his small size Mruthangam . Mani took it from him & adjusted the sruthi in no time & began to play with it . It was Mani’s intention that , Pazhani shouldn’t be left alone without showing his talent in a sabai of vidhvans .

Not only to Mani’s talk through Mruthangam , but also his oral words had the same respect in those dxays . once , he came to Calcutta for a Kaccheri . Alatthur Bros – vocal ; T.N.Krishnan – violin ; Mani Mruthangam . Alatthur was the Secretary of the Thyagaraja uthsava committee & Mani was the treasurer . As required by Alatthur subbaiyar , Mnai requested the rasikas to donate liberally to the Aradhana . After the Kaccheri was over , the rasikas handed over Rs. 4,000/- on the spot . It was a big amount in those days & it was the respect shown to Mani’s words . 
Evn th eVidhvans knew that Mani won’t get back from his word . Just read this important incidence . Alatthur Subbaiyar , came to Madras & was staying in his close relative’s home ( Sambandhi ) – Pappa Venkatramaiyya . His instinct told him that his end had come .

Immediately he sent word to bring Palghat Mani . He caught hold of Mani & said “ Mani , it seems that I would pass away very soon . In future , you should support Sreenivasan ( Alatthur Sreenivasa Iyer ) & help him . You should give me this word now . “ Mani was very sad of this . “ Why do you talk like this ? You are goiung to be alive still for a very long years . Why such a thought for you ! “ & consoled him . But Subbaiyar emphasised his request again & Mani gave him the word as required . Then , Mani took leave of him & didn’t even came to the end of that street ; here Subbaiyar had become a past tense ! Still , Subbaiyar’s instinct is wondering me & his confidence over Mani too . Subbaiyar’s son was the Principal of Trichy National College & retired . He only told me this information . If only , I hadn’t been diverted by the cricket interest , I would have become the disciple of Mani Iyer . Somehow , my life is turned differently today . 
Eventhen , I never went to bed , without listening his Mruthangam , in all these years . That sunadham is mixed with my mind !

Evn th eVidhvans knew that Mani won’t get back from his word . Just read this important incidence . Alatthur Subbaiyar , came to Madras & was staying in his close relative’s home ( Sambandhi ) – Pappa Venkatramaiyya . His instinct told him that his end had come .

Immediately he sent word to bring Palghat Mani . He caught hold of Mani & said “ Mani , it seems that I would pass away very soon . In future , you should support Sreenivasan ( Alatthur Sreenivasa Iyer ) & help him . You should give me this word now . “ Mani was very sad of this . “ Why do you talk like this ? You are goiung to be alive still for a very long years . Why such a thought for you ! “ & consoled him . But Subbaiyar emphasised his request again & Mani gave him the word as required . Then , Mani took leave of him & didn’t even came to the end of that street ; here Subbaiyar had become a past tense ! Still , Subbaiyar’s instinct is wondering me & his confidence over Mani too . Subbaiyar’s son was the Principal of Trichy National College & retired . He only told me this information . If only , I hadn’t been diverted by the cricket interest , I would have become the disciple of Mani Iyer . Somehow , my life is turned differently today . 
Even then , I never went to bed , without listening his Mruthangam , in all these years . That sunadham is mixed with my mind

General :-  MADURAI MANI IYER 
19 YEARS OF BHAGYAM ! BY THIRUVENKADU JEYARAMAN .

The late Madurai Mani Iyer was a chapter in the Indian Carnatic music field . He was a great Kohinoor diamond { just came & gone }. We know only his incomparable music & don’t know him as a “ great human “. His soujanyam was as simple as his great music . The combination of both simplicity & beauty , is a very rare one , isn’t it ? Sri Jeayaraman is a lamp in a vessel (Kudam ) in the music world . Of the disciples of Mani Iyer , he was immediate next to Vembu Iyer , who was the right hand of Mani Iyer . He lived with Mani Iyer as his disciple in his home . He is the best Teacher of date . He is sharing hi thoughts with us here . Now , over to him :- 
“ 19 great years ! Yes ! I was blessed to live with that Mahathma – the greatest music exponent admired all over the world ! It was my poorva jenma punya , that in disguise of my Guru , elevated & blessed me . I should also refer another name immediately , after uttering my Guru’s name – he too is my Guru . I am referring Sri Vembu Anna , who came down to my level than that of my Guru Mani Iyer , to teach me music . He was the one who handed me over to Mani Iyer & included me as a member of that family . 

Our family in Thiruvenkadu had no any sort of connection with the music at all & I was the first one of that kind . My father & grand father were both Vedhic exponents . ( Vedha vitthu ) . My father’s elder brother used to paint excellently . So , everybody insisted my grand father to make me too a painter by giving the right training in it . But he refused saying “ How to go for another profession rather than studying vedha , in our Vedhic family ? “ It is only a divine decision that I am blessed to learn music , coming from such a Vedhic family . I would sing back , if somebody sings infront of me . One day , my grand mother was singing a song . I was replaying it just by hearing it . grand dad listened me . He must have thought some thing , I don’t know . He said “ it seems this fellow will learn music “ & arranged our local Agora Nayanakar to teach me music by fixing Rs 2/= pm as salary ! I continued both school studies & music . I had go a long distance to the school & at a stage I had to give it up for the sake of the music . Then , I learned music from our relative Melattoor Swaminatha Dhikshithar at Kumbakonam for 5 years . At this stage our family suddenly suffered & I had to look after that . Then again the thirst of music . I suffered like hell to search for a right Guru . The God used to help me in difficulties & in the same way this problem too was solved . 

On the advise of my grandma , I went Mayavaram to learn music . It was during evacuation . Mani Iyer too was there . I just had little wavering mind on seeing the name board at the entrance of his house . “ Just go & explain my situation . if he okays it , won’t it be my luck ? “ Thinking so , I reached his door step . Vembu Anna was singing inside . He just saw me & enquired about me & took me inside . From that day onwards , he never let me down till the last . 
“ This boy wants to learn music from you . “ As there was a screen in between I couldn’t see the person he was talking to . On the other side , my Gurunatha was sitting . “ tell that boy to sing something ! “ I sat at that place next to the verandah & sang Thyagaraja’s adamodi kalathe Keerthan . I couldn’t find whether he liked or not . “ Where are you residing ? “ “ how will you come from Thiruvenkadu ? It is 8 miles away & you will have to walk ! “ he worried . I was glad thinking inwardly that a I got a prize & said “ No . It is not that much difficult . I will come . “ 
“ In a month I will be only a few days here . After considering all that I will teach . “ Then he consulted the almanac himself to find an auspicious day & said “ We will start on the 9th June . Come on that day . “ My relationship with him began on that 9th June & that bhagyam continued for 19 full years & ended on an 8th June & he was no more on that day . ( Tears roll down on his cheeks uncontrollably) . I walked 8 miles & learned music , whenever my Gurunatha was in town . Then , I got an old cycle . Then , Kuttralam Visvanathaiyar was in Mayavaram . Vembu Anna & myself used to go to his house & playful kaccheries would be going on till late night . Anna would bring me back saying “ come home & have dinner & sleep “ Like this , I casually began to stay there . I never asked for a permission & they too never told me to stay . but treated me casually as if I was one of the family members . Vembu Anna was behind it . 
Later , when Gurunatha returned to Madras he told me “ You too come to Madras with us “ Vembu Anna was behind this too . Whenever Gurunatha was not in town , it was Vembu Anna , who taught me music . He started teaching from playing Thambur . He wished that I should really become great in music . He had very big heart . To put it rightly , my gurunatha was a punyavan . Otherwise , would he have got one like Vembu Anna , to look after him lifelong that much carefully ? He protected him like , protecting the lighted lamp with the palms . Though , he didn’t sing professionally , his was the music so deep . His entire desire in music had been doused after the demise of the Gurunatha ! He separated himself like a Sanyasin . His son Sankaranarayanan is compensating his absence , by singing brilliantly . 

I come back to my life with my Gurunatha . I had gone aalover the country & not only learned the music but the life too . His each & every word action would be so deeply thought over well . They used to comment about the musicians know only the music . He proved it wrong . He had interest in the day to day worldly affairs & would listen to the news of the radio daily . Even when his eye sight bcame too dim , he would tell me to read the Hindu & listen . My poor knowledge in English improved only by him . He would tell me to read the spelling of the difficult words ( to me ) & explain me the meaning . He was an expert in advising minutely to his disciples & friends . He would do it with reasons & facts . He gave me the thambur , in 1957 & said “ Whenever you visit any kaccheri , go along with this ; shouldn’t go without this . Then only others will know who you are & your profession ; Then the news will soread ; It will help & remind them to book you for a concert . Thambur is doing free advertisement to you . Remember this always . So practical . 

He had much interest in the politics . Gandhian . His close friends named a pet name with Gandhi ! This friends’ circle was in Trichy . There was Radhakrishnan building with 15/20 houses . Ghatam vidhvan Alangudi Ramachandran too was there . Gurunatha’s friends : Orient Insurance Srinivasa Iyer , Visvanatha Iyer , Manikkodi writer Citti @ Sundararajan etc would celebrate 2 day Srirama Navami festival . First day Vembu Anna would sing ; Next day Gurunatha would . Thiruvalankadu Sundaresa Iyer , Govindasami Pillai etyc had played the pakka vadhyams . These friends would move with him very closely with a right . Because he always expressed his opinions firmly but softly , theynamed him Handhi . Citti would express his views in a cut & dry manner . So , he was CR ( Rajaji ) ; Insurance Srinivasan looked after the fionancial side & hence he was Deshmukh ( the then Financial minister ) 

It was a pleasant scene to them all discussing the worldly affairs , Even now , It gives pleasure . Golden days is the right expression to describe it . Gurunatha used to talk with examples . Some of them would be related with the cooking . He hada friend namely Rajanna Chettiar . Once Guru explained him “ What is a good music ? “ He began “ drop the tamrind in the good lead vessel ( sombu ) of Kumbakonam …..” and till frying in the pure ghee . “ The portion on standing on the upper part , you see , that Is rasam . The portion lying under the vessel ( vandal ) is the reason for the taste of the rasam . In the music too , all the efforts , sincere work , etc ; of the beginning days , all should stay underneath as gnana vandal . Then only the tasty rasam is available . “ He had a good taste in food ; but the quantity he ate was too less; quality conscious ! “ An artist’s duty is only to please the audience . If say that you are singing for yourself , then you should sing in your home only . When you have come to a public dais , then you must respect the desire of the audience who come eagerly to listen your concert & please him . “ He used to say . 

Once his concert in the Kapali temple of Mylapore . I have seen the people sitting on the compound wall to listen him . He would sometimes tell me go & check how the mike works . I went out & listened to the mike . A rickshawala , kept the seat of his rickshaw on the road & rested on it to listen the concert . Somebody called him to hire him . “ my cart won’t come today > “ Are ! Take more money , if you want . get up . “ “ What a big money is yours . I can earn it tomorrow easily . But , if I miss iyer’s music today , then how & when to get it again ? My cart WON”T COME “ This is the magnanimity of my Gurunath’s music . He attracted all from the layman to vidhvans – Gana Kaladhara . Never disappointed his fans .

Another example of same Kapali temple concert . Still a few more minutes to finish the concert . It was already 11.45 pm . A fan shouted “ Sing Chakkaniraja “ What a big keertthan it is ? Gurunatha sang it enthusiastically . It was 2 pm night , when we reached home . I asked him “ You said you were not well . You need not have sung that keerthan …. ?” He replied sharply “ Jeyarama ! That fan had come with a strong hope that I would surely sing it ! Asking for it eagerly . The fans attending such concerts in the temples , are mostly very poor ones . They can’t pay more money in the Sabhas to listen the concerts . When such people dmand , we must sing & please them . “ It is our duty to please the common people like them . “ That’s my 
Gurunatha ! 

At the same time , very learned people with gnanam in music , too were his fans . Reda this incxidence . Cine actor Baliah’s daughter’s marriage was held in the Abbudsbury – Mount road . Many people knew him as an actor only . But he had a very fair knowledge in music too . He requested my Gurunatha “ In the marriage rush , I wouldn’t be able to enjoy your concert . So , you sing for me at 9 pm after all the rush is gone . “ My agurunatha accepted it immediately . 
For that night concert , VIPs like T.K.S. brothers , sarangapani , M.K.Radha – only 100 people . But regards to the music sense , each one was equal to 100 persons . Good fans . Gurunatha sang brilliantly . Lalgudi , Palghat , Pazhani Subbudu – pakka vadhyam . Should it be dedscribed ! Two thani avartthans like fire works ! He would please such audience of vidhvath too . The athmanubhava music was his . 

He would comment bitterly “ What qualification you & me have got to sing “Nithi sala sukhama ? Don’t we stretch out our hand to take money , once the concert is over ….? “ And , he was simply accepting the amount given , without any fixation ! 

Then , he would be too careful to select the right songs with right mangala words , in the marriage concerts . Incase , if he had to sing such negative songs there , he would simply miss such amangala words & give a lengthy karvai & go to the next sentence . It would be a fantastic experience , when his voice melts with the sruthi of the thambur .  When he was residing near NageswaraRao park telephone exchange , in Madras , the Nadhaswara Emperor T.N.Rajarathnam Pillai used to come & talk to Gurunatha for hours together . Both T.N.R. & G.N.B. were his close friends . 

He worried about my future . Once my concert was held in the T.Nagar Arts Academy . Both Sankaranarayanan & his sister came enjoyed & went to Gurunatha’s home & told him “ Thed concert was very good . “ Then , when Gurunatha told me afterwards , “ I cross questioned Raman . ‘ did Jeyaraman sang really good or just spoiled it ? Tell me the truth ! ‘ You know aht Raman replied ? ‘ Why do you question like this ? He was with you for so many years ! Would he spoil it ? ‘ Then I only I was satisfied “ He watched my concert in that manner . 

He used to say often “ must sing with athma suddhi “ He sang like that only , wasn’t
it ? That Paramacharya himself knew his Parisuddham . Once HE attended a Kumbabhishekam & visited Gurunatha’s house too . We all did namaskaram & greeted Him . “ Where is Mani ? “ A relative of Gurunatha replied “ He feels sorry that he has not yet finished his bath . He will fdinish bath & come now fast “ I still remember Paramacharya’s words “ Mani need not bathe at all . He is always madi & Parisuddham only . Tell him to come . “ I was blessed to live with such a Parisuddha Athma ! Today , I am fully contented . That’s his celetial blessing ! 

THE UNFORGETTABLE TRIO’S HEAVENLY PERFORMANCE !
Many of you may be remembering the AIR’s programmes of the sweet , good old days ! Especially the week – end kaccheri of a senior Vidhavan in the late night one & half hour’s programme beginning from 9.30 pm . Though very late , I humbly submit this here for you all to enjoy , as I already promised you dear Mr ravichandran ! Once , a superb performance was announced by the AIR for the week – end the rarest combination of the famous Trio – a live & not a pre – recorded one : - Mali { Flute } + Palakkadu { Mruthangam } + Mysore { Chowdaiyya – violin } The whole of the week ,we , all the members of our joint family { 15 Nos;} were pushing each day with impatience . That day too arrived finally & at night we all finished our dinner in one single circle { Pandhi – normally it will be in 3 or 4 rounds } & settled before the Radio in the hall . the performance began : Mali started with full force after a couple of keertthans fast “ Marukelara … ! “ & in 10 minutes he began to slide slowly to the side track ….. by & by…. & finally as we all feared ….. he began with “ thirudhu …thitthu….thitthu…..thirudhu….
thitthuth thirudhu..thirudhuth thitthitthu….thiru thiru thitthu ….thith…thith…ththitthitthu…… ! “ we all gave up our hope…. Saying each other “ Ok ! that’s today’s kaccheri . it’s all gone ! That’s all the praptham ! “ Palakkadu Mysore were tirelessly giving him back each & every “ thitthitj thirudhu “ ! Time was running up . Suddenly , Mali’s voice over the mike heard clearly “ Namma moonu perla otthanavadhu ezhundhu poganum illiya ? “ { Of the three of us , atleast one should get out , isn’t it } . Our stomach came to our mouth ! ‘ Adappavi ! Has spoilt the whole of the performance . The people should not even sneeze or cough in between the performance . Already we were worried . Ok , let it go with that damn thitthu thirudhu . He could have gone ahead with that atleast . Now , if the officer of the AIR utilises this opportunity & announces “ Neyargale idhuvarai neengal kettdhau….meendum nalaik kalai 5 manikku sandhippom vanakkam ! “ He would simply close the office & go home ! We shall have to pull on the whole night awake as Rappadi ! ‘ We felt like sitting on the bed of thorns . Suddenly there was a flash in the Radio . He finished Marukelara , with “ Makelara ! We couldn’t help enjoying that TOO with a sad laugh ! Already the stipulated time was over & it was around 11.15 pm ! Within a second he began his master piece Ninnu vina & kept on going up & up gradually …simply superb . it was over & the next fraction of a second The Mali Maharaja got on to his Pattatthu Pachakalyani Horse with his Raghu vamsa sudha …….. in a slow & lethargic tak . takatak walk …. Then he very slowly & very gradually increase the speed step by step & was going on in the AIR as the real Raghu Maharaja ! The tears started rolling down our cheeks …… he was still going on in the gaganam as long as he wished in full swing in naalukaal paaicchal , continuously for about 20 minutes or so . We were still with him in the sky above & didn’t even know how he switched over to punnagavarali at 11.30 in the night ! Oh ! how to describe it ! It was sliding from his shoulders & again & again he picked it up & put it on his shoulders playing , walking it , making it to hiss , let it run fast through the bushes & carrying it back like a child….. oh , that should be heard to have/feel that experience alive ! Slowlywhen he placed it to sleep , it was 12 past midnight ! Never inb the history of AIR – Madras before & after ever ! We simply blessed THAT Officer in charge on that night to our satisfaction !
Can we enjoy it in this birth again , can we ? Why not ? Yes , there is a way for that too ! There MUST be the recorded tape of that performance in the AIR certainly ! If only a VVIP takes initiative to to find it out to re – broadcast or in the form of a CD ! I pray& wish that Supreme Power to let this wish become true at the very earliest !

A SEARCH FOR GOD ! 
Question : - Who is that NARAYANAN ? What is karma ? 
Sage : - Because , He is always in the water { Milk ocean } called Naaram in Sanskrit , He is Narayanan ; Ocean of Milk is the place He lives in ; Vaikuntham is His Residence !
A life is created ONLY by the combination of the Pancha Bhoothas . HE is the one who has grouped up in one , called Adisesha & sleeping on it ; He is awake like sleeping ; But , there are millions , who are awake the whole day , don’t know to approach Him & are sleeping mentally . The entire wealth of this World is under His lotus feet ; The wish of the waves is ‘ Won’t you just care to see us too ? ‘ ; The total shape of those waves is Sri Mahalkshmi ; SHE is sitting at His feet & soothing them with Her fingers ;We call a rich man as the strong one ; But , just imagine what a whale of a Wealth/Treasure
He should be , when all the wealth under His feet to become a woman & catching hold of HIS feet ! 
If He stands – it is Visvaroopa ; if HE sits – it is the Marriage posture ; If He sees – it is the motherly affection than a mother’s ; If He speaks – it is Geetha ; in short , HE is everything ; everything is HIM …!
This World came out of HIM only ; In it was created this forest ; I was created ; You were created ; we were created ; Look at the sky spread to infinity ; from it onwards , the Moon , the Stars the Sun to everything was created { by Him }. From Him , we were separated by Him only { Dhvaitham } ; By Him only , we should go back to Him { Adhvaitham } ; This birth , we have taken up now , is the ONLY route to reach Him back again ; 
Just to realize Him , this 6th sense is given ; If we don’t realise Him with the healp of it , itself will become a great sin ; further , because , we don’t realise Him , we are covered by the Maya { the worldly affairs } ; and , for which , it has become our life to take birth after birth , only to suffer hunger & thirst ; 
Only by escaping tfrom this hunger & thirst , we can escape this shit { kama , krodha , lobha , moha , madha , mathsaryam } etc; only by escaping this shit , we can escape from this body ; only by escaping this body we can attain reach Him back again !
And , in this whole World , there is only one that helps us to reach Him ; and, that’s the ONE & the ONLY word – Astakshara – Om Namo Narayanaya ! With the help of this one NAMA alone , we should keep swimming in this ocean of births ! “ 
Question : - Is it possible to reach THAT Narayana ? 
Sage : - Why not ? A crocodile reached Him ; An elephant reached Him { By calling Him ADHIMOOLM – The very origin of everything } ; The cat which drank the left ovr milk after HE drank in the Gokulam , has reached ; So , it is possible for you & me too ; but , the Total surrender & the pure crystal like mind are essential ; if we don’t have them both , we too will become Dhuryodhans , of not knowing Him , though we are so near to Him ; 
Question : - if it is the case , shall I too , start my penance ? 
Sage : - Don’t be in such a hurry . Penance is – to control the five organs . It is NOT that much easy…..
Question : - I have confidence . hereafter , reaching that NARAYANA is my only aim . Can’t I ? 
Sage : - easy to utter ; but very hard to prove . Once you have gone deep into the penance , the beasts of this forest like the python , lion & tiger may try to attack & swallow you…….
Question : - let whatever happen Swamin ! Once I start the penance , I will become His property , isn’t it ? then , is it not HIS duty to protect me ? 
Sage : - OAlright! My child . I bless you ! Firstly , it will increase the benefit of the penance , if you go & get the total acceptance & blessings of your mother ! 
Question : Mother ! I am going to the forest & do penance towards Sriman Narayana ! Will you please , accept this & bles me fully ! 
Mother { after a big argument } : - Oh my dear son ! The flesh of your body is grown up by eating the flesh . It can’t be controlled by the penance . 
Question : - To control such a body IS only the penance , mother ! Won’t you bless me ? 
Mother : - Oh ! Dear Son ! I am proud of you . Though you are born in this hunter’s family , you have the highest goal on Earth ! I accept your decision totally & bless you to my satisfaction !
